Send Him an invite instead

adorned-woman-kenya-2017

So the other day, my little sister Sandra called me. As I was listening to her go on and on about her fabulous life, she mentioned a new resolution she had made.

“I have decided that from 2017 I will cultivate a reading culture. I will read a book every month” she said. The minute she finished talking, I broke into a thunderous laughter 🙂 I laughed so hard that I felt bad for laughing that much afterwards. (Sorry again baby girl 🙂

But I wasn’t really laughing at her (at least not the whole time :-D, I was laughing because I remembered how I would make such amazing lists for the New Year, and everywhere I turn I hear others making them too…

This year I will wake up at 5 am every morning to jog… This year, I will read five books in a month… I will climb Mt. Kenya, and learn how to make guacamole ….” And the list goes on and on.

And for the first few months, we all  follow it religiously but somewhere around March; we get tired, throw the list under the bed and move back to our usual routines.

New Year resolutions for me, is like picking up the Bible, listing down all the commands in it and making up my mind to follow all of them on my own. It never works. Try following those rules and see how far you will go. You will follow them for a week or two, then with time it will get too overwhelming and you’ll give up all together. You need a higher power. You need the Holy Spirit everyday to help you keep the least of the commands.

And guess what even for those New Year plans, you need that Higher power.

I kept making plans and failing horribly till I learned something different; Inviting God into my plans. My Mom taught us to do so every end of year. What we do basically, is we each write down our desires for the New Year in form of prayers. A New Year prayer list!

My favorite part is going back to that list as the year goes by and seeing how God answers them, most times in ways I never imagined.

I have seen God do so much for me by asking for His help, as opposed to writing down a list that I never even manage to keep till quarter of the year.

Secret tip that I usually use – before writing them down I ask Him to help me write the requests as well as give me a word for the year. I simply ask “Lord what you want for me this year? Help me write your desires for my life this year” Then afterwards, I write whatever is in my heart, be it spiritual, physical or material.

I believe inviting God into New Year plans, and any other plan for that matter is the wisest decision anyone can make. God knows what is best for you and I. God knows which way we should go this year, God knows exactly what will work out for us and what won’t. But He also doesn’t invade into our space. He’s given you the choice. You can choose to invite him into every detail of your life and  let Him guide you through or you can have it your own way and  do whatever you want however you want (We both know how that ends)

My prayer for you is that this year, you would INVITE HIM. If you aren’t born again, invite him into your heart. It’s the best life you will ever have.

It’s not a complicated thing. It involves you going to Him in prayer, repenting of your sins and asking him to come into your heart and be the Lord of your life. Then you can look for fellow believers who can guide you through your new found life.

If you are born again, my challenge to you is to invite him. Most of us Christians go about our lives as if God only exists on Sunday and is only interested with our Sunday persona.

Invite him into every detail of your daily life. Into the big things and the small things, into the messy areas and the perfect ones, into your dreams, your desires, your job, your relationship, your singlehood and even the struggles you have. (Everything)

He says, For I know the plans I have for you. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

Why not entrust your life with one who can not only be trusted but also assures you that he has a great plan for you?

Send Him that Invite this year!

Happy New Year dear ones and here’s to a 2017 of falling deeper in love with Jesus, and inviting Him to every detail of our lives!

  1. Hello dear blogger. Loved this post and heartily agree with what you have said. I have been doing this for the past 2-3 years but only started thinking about my one word for the year, this year. In fact I totally forgot about the one word, until I read your post today, so thanks for the reminder.
I would add that it is good to review those goal/plans/one word regularly, so you don’t forget what they are, or what you are working towards.
Excellent word. Your mum is a wise woman!
    Thank you for sharing.

  2. Amen. True send Jesus an invitation to your prayers, plans, desires and needs, then wait upon Him. He will suprise you by His faithfulness. Sure He has good plans for everyone of us. Psalms 138:8. “The Lord will perfect that which concern me; your mercy oh Lord endures forever: Do not forsake the works of your hands”. I pray that this year God will perfect that which concern us, for He is full of mercy, and we are His own children, created by Him. Blessed year

Sure indeed let’s invite Him into our space. Otherwise we keep failing in and out when we use our strength
